Alice spent a while longer catching up with Mac and Eliza, then headed home to shower and change before setting up in a blissfully air-conditioned coffee shop to squeeze in some more work while she still had the chance. Who knew if Jackson was going to show up with another spontaneously sexy plan and leave her schedule in the dust?

Not that it was his fault. No, the blame lay squarely at Alice’s feet, and she was more than happy to take full responsibility for her reckless, carefree actions . . .

She smiled, finding it hard to even focus on the briefs in front of her on the table. Skinny-dipping, camping . . . What would he think of next? She’d wanted something to shake up her life, and Jackson was certainly obliging, but it wasn’t just the thrilling adventure driving her halfway to distraction.

No, Alice felt a fluttering in her chest just thinking about him—the man himself. Jackson was charming and quick-witted and devastatingly handsome, sure, but he also had a thoughtful streak, buried beneath that reckless smile. The way he looked at the world was fascinating to Alice—the beauty he saw in everyday things, and the attention to detail it took to transform that vision into images on the page. He liked to play at being cavalier, but she’d seen the care he took in his photographic studio, poring over the negatives and painstakingly bringing them to life. It was the same care he took with his grandfather.

The same care he took with her.

Alice wasn’t used to that kind of focus and attention from a man. Sure, she’d dated plenty of guys over the years, and even thought herself in love a couple of times, back in law school and when she was just starting out. But she’d always been drawn to men like herself: ambitious, logical, single-minded in their career, but not so much when it came to their passions. She thought that’s what she wanted, someone with that same drive as her, who would understand why she worked until nine p.m. at the office when there was a brief due and stayed tethered to her laptop on the weekend.

But now, Alice saw different could be good. Different was exciting and unexpected. Jackson had his own career and accomplishments, sure, but he seemed to take on the world at a slower pace. As if life were as much about living as achieving something, too.

A novel thought.

“Your mother said I would find you here.”

Alice snapped out of her daydreams just as a large box of papers dropped on the table in front of her, delivered by the trusted—and feared—town secretary.

“Franny, hi.” She blinked, grabbing her coffee mug out of the way to avoid a spill. “What’s all this?”

“Some more materials for the exhibition,” Franny replied from behind her trademark tortoise-shell glasses. “I managed to find a haul in one of the storage closets at the Mayor’s office. You do still need them, don’t you?”

“Absolutely!” Alice agreed.

Franny paused, eyeing Alice’s papers.
